The Toy at the Bottom of This Page
explained by the confetti
there's a music player clamped to the bottom of every page on this site. when a song plays, it throws confetti. the confetti has a few things to say about what it is, why it disappears the instant you hit pause, and who went to the trouble of making it.
i am the confetti at the bottom of this page. i only exist while a song is playing. pause it and i’m gone — not hidden, gone — and i don’t take it personally, because that was the arrangement from the start.
let me tell you what i am while i’m still here to do it.
what i am
i live in the little white player box clamped to the bottom of your screen. press play and i start raining from somewhere up inside it, spill over the edge, and drift down the page. that’s the whole act.
i start at the very top of the box on purpose, so it looks like the music is leaking me out. then i fall.
on the homepage i’m a menace. here i behave.
you’re reading, so you get the calm version of me. low gravity. slow. i drift near the bottom and stay there. i checked: i never get past the middle of the screen, because nobody wants to read a paragraph through a blizzard.
the homepage is where i lose it. over there i’ve got siblings: little constellations of colored dots that ride the song, cool and blue when it’s quiet, hot up top when it’s loud. there are cards that float around, and i pile up on them and get swatted off when one gets kicked. on a heavy enough beat, a gust comes up from the floor and throws my fallen pieces back into the air. none of that happens here. here it’s just me and the flat gray dots in the background that never move. a reading page should stay readable.

i only exist when the music does
this is the part i care about most. i am not a loading spinner. i don’t run on a timer. i’m tied to one thing: whether a song is playing in that box.
play: i show up. pause: i stop, and the pieces still in the air clear out instead of finishing their fall. it wasn’t always like that. for a while i’d keep snowing after the song had ended, littering a silent page. small thing. still wrong. somebody caught it and fixed me so that i begin and end with the sound, and nothing past it.
there’s a second player on some pages: the dark one, further up, that plays other people’s sets, under “keep digging.” start that and this box pauses, and so do i. one song is alive at a time. someone sat down and made that a rule.
i learned to hear the kick
i used to be bad at the beat. my levels were wrong, so on the loudest songs i’d go half-deaf right when it mattered and shrug through the drop.
then someone went through the catalog one song at a time, with a meter, found where the low end was hiding, and reset me to match. now i catch the kick. when it lands hard, you can see it in how much of me piles up at once. that’s patience nobody owed a fistful of paper scraps.

who built me
the person whose songs play in that box made me. and i’ll be honest about what i am: i’m not useful. i don’t do a job. i’m not for sale, and i’m not a clever way to make you want something.
i’m here because someone decided that pressing play should make something happen. that a song arriving deserved a little weather. that’s the entire reason. a person sweated the gravity, the levels, and the exact instant i’m supposed to disappear, all for a handful of confetti that lives and dies inside one song, for nothing but that it feels good.

so. it’s right there at the bottom of your screen. press play, and i’ll show up and do the one thing i know, for as long as the song lasts.
